El Refugio is located on the cliffs of La Matanza approx 250 m above the sea. 

 

It is located in an absolutely exposed position in the sun belt of the North and is also known as the sunniest community on the north coast of Tenerife. The nature reserve Costa Acentejo, with its circular hiking trail and path to the sea, starts just a few steps from the property. Relax in a calm, rural environment far away from the beaten track!

 

Additionally, the holiday residence is an ideal starting point for hiking and exploring the area. 

 

La Matanza offers numerous shops as well as a farmer’s market every weekend. There, you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables as well as regional specialties such as goat’s cheese, wine, Canarian pottery or embroidery directly from local farmers. 

 

Puerto de la Cruz, a city popular with tourists, is about 15 km away; heading out there to the hustle and bustle and return to an oasis of tranquility .

Do I need a car?
Yes, because El Refugio is located in a very quiet area, away from mass tourism. The island is also full of interesting places to discover. Most guests without a car end up regretting it.

How far is El Refugio / Casa del Sol from the airport?
From Tenerife South Airport, it's 80 km to El Refugio — about a 45-minute drive.
From Tenerife North Airport, it’s only a 10-minute drive.
(Note: Tenerife North Airport is only served by flights with a stopover on the Spanish mainland.)

Where can I go shopping?
There are supermarkets in the village — about 1,000 meters away.

Where can I go out to eat?
The restaurant Felix food & wine is just 100 meters away. In the nearby village of La Matanza, you’ll find several typical Canarian restaurants serving tapas or freshly grilled fish.

What is the best time of year to visit?
Tenerife is also called the island of eternal spring, so it’s beautiful year-round. Even in summer, the climate is pleasantly mild — without the unbearable heat found in many other parts of Spain.

As the crow flies, about 1,500 meters. On foot, it takes about an hour.

How far is the nearest beach?
The closest rocky beach is El Caletón — just 5 minutes by car and a real insider tip, especially in summer. The beaches of Puerto de la Cruz can be reached in 15 minutes.
