Tenerife’s cuisine has its historical roots in the time after the discovery of America. Its starting points were the products transported to and from the New World as well as the culinary habits of different peoples as determined by natural sources. All of these factors then mixed with the traditional local cuisine.
From a culinary, as well as a geographical standpoint, Tenerife, with its mountains, valleys, long rocky coasts, beaches and cities is like a small continent in itself. Various cuisines, which exist hundreds of kilometers apart in other places, can be found side by side here. The food of the Canary Islands’ fishers is simple and original. Herbs and spices are used only sparingly, while the freshness of the products and simplicity of preparation are emphasized.
